INTERNASIONAL KITE FESTIVAL
Location : DKI Jakarta

The festival is held to boast Jakarta as a tourist attraction and encourage the creativeness of the craftmen in kite making.

LAKE POSO FESTIVAL
Location : Central Sulawesi
Date : 1 August - 31 August
This the tenth festival which will be held on a lavish scale by the local people in Central Sulawesi to welcome the 21st century and will be participated by 20 countries. The festival will include traditional dances, bamboo musical show, bamboo rafting, handicraft fair and other performances.

MALAY CULTURAL FESTIVAL
Location : Riau
Date : 1 August - 31 August
Highlights of the festival includes Malay cultural performances, parade of various local arts, traditional sports, and seminar. There will also be exhibition on arts and crafts, painting, and fashion.

SOUTH SULAWESI Cultural Week
Location : South Sulawesi
Date : 1 September - 30 September
The once week variety shows presented by the 23 regencies within the South Sulawesi Province. Besides art and cultural performances, there are also a number of contents and traditional games. The event is opened by a parade of the participating regions.

Bulls Racing
Location : East Java
Date : 8 December
The very popular sport and spectacle is held regularly at least twice a month at Bangkalan on the island of Madura, about half an hour by ferry from Surabaya. Bull racing is a great event inMadura especially the annual races for the island's championship which are usually held by thelocal administration after the harvest time in September and October. The finals are held at Pamekasan capital of the island, once a year. Special races can be organied, given three das advance notice

Besakih Temple Festival
Location : Bali
Date : 8 December
Temple Festival occur almost in Bali, such as the Odalan or temple's anniversary celebration. Offerings are carried to the temple. There are purification ceremonies and a fair atmosphere prefails. At night performance of sacral dances. Wayang Kulit (shadow) puppet and gamelan music are held.

Pasar Apung
Location : South Kalimantan
Date : 8 December
Every morning between 5 am to 9 am, the local people sell from their rowing boats along the Martapura river. There also a lot of bartering of goods.

The Textiles are Made of Samarinda
Location : East Kalimantan
Date : 8 December
Local hand weaving different design and colour. Display of traditional woven textiles and clothing of the Dayak Benuaq tribe. The textiles are made of Doyo material from back belian ceremony (for people who are sick), accompanied by the reading mantras (magical charms)

The Toraja Death Ritual

Location : South Sulawesi
Date : 8 December
The Toraja death ritual are elaborates feasts which hold the greates significances in the society. The more elaborate the rituals, the higher family's gratitude and esteem considered to be for departed member. The rituals begin with the taking off the coffin from the family house, accompanied by the tau-tau , a wooden effigy of the death person.

Minang of Traditional Dances
Location : West Sumatera

Performances of traditional Minang are staged at 8 pm daily and at the end of the show, the audience are welcome to participate.
The Leather Puppet Shadow Play

HARVEST FESTIVAL

A traditional thanksgiving ceremony of the sirnarasa people after harvest season. The event is held anually presenting an exhibition of the local way of living as to how the cultivate the agricultural produce.

BELU CULTURAL FESTIVAL
Location : East Nusa Tenggara

The week long festival is hightlighted with art performances traditional sport competition and exhibition of the development of the region and local handicraft products.

RAMAYANA BALLET
Location : Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta

Open-air theatre, Prambanan Temple, Yogyakarta. The Ramayana Ballet full story is performed on the open stage theatre at Prambanan Temple from 7.30 - 9.00 pm. Episodes are the abduction of Shinta, Anoman Obong (Hanoman's Mission), the Death of Kumbokarno's and Shinta Trial of Purity

Kraton Festival
Location : Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta

This event will be participated in at least by 10 former Sultanates (among others Kraton Surakarta and Mangkunegaran of Solo, Kraton Yogyakarta, Kraton Kanoman and Kasepuhan of Cirebon, Palace of Pagaruyung, batusangkar, Palace of Sriwijaya of Palembang, Palace of Gowa, South Sulawesi, Palce of Klungkung of Bali, etc). Heirlooms of all these Sultanates will be exhibited during the festival. Some of the main features are Indonesian Royal Classical Dance Parade, Royal Fashion Exhibition and show, food festival, turtledove Song Contest, Traditional cultural performances, sport competition, seminar, wooden and leather puppet show and other attractions.

Wayang Orang
Location : DKI Jakarta

Performance of the Javanese Wayang Wong or Wayang Orang dance drama can be seen every Wednesday evening at the Gedung Kesenian Theatre starting at 8.15 pm and lasting till about midnight. The stories of the Wayang Wong usually relate episode of the Mahabharata and Ramayana Hindu Epics.

Garebeg ceremony

Numplak Wajik (wajik : a food made of sticky rice ) is a ceremony held in the course of preparing Gunungan for the Garebeg ceremony. The traditional art of shadow puppets play and macapatan also perform this month.

Garebeg Besar Ceremony

Garebeg Besar Ceremony is held on 2nd of February at Sultan Palace, white the other traditional ceremony named Thowong is held at the night before. Tapa Bisu Mubeng Beteng is an ascetism ritual by walking around the palace fotress. People walking without speaking, this tradition is held to celebrate Javanese New Year Eve.on the 1st os Suro month.

Ketoprak

An offshoot of the Wayang Wong dance drama is the modern popular javanese theatre which takes its stories from popular folk legends and from history. Like the Wayang Wong. the Ketoprak show is accompanied by gamelan music but simpler in costumes and dialogue. Performance can be seen in Jakarta at Gedung Kesenian Theatre every Wednesday and Thursday evening, starting at 8.00 pm.

Traditional Indonesian Dances

Wayang Kulit (Leather Puppet Shadow Play)

Wayang Kulit (Leather Puppet) shows are performed every second and last Saturday night of the month at the Central Museum in Jakarta. Abbreviated versions, lasting for about on hour, are also presented every sunday morning at the Wayang Museum Fatahillah Square downtown Jakarta.

KESODO FESTIVAL
Location : East Java
Date : 1 October
A midnight oferring ceremony at the crater of Mt. Bromo, the active and dominant volcano in The Tengger Mountain range of East Java. Held annually on the 14 th day of Kesodo, the month of then Tenggerese year. The actual ceremony begins at dawn when priest of the Tenggerese Budha Dharma relegion prepare themselves for the offering riitual. The offering consisting of rice, fruits, flowers and vegetables are brought by thousand believers from the surrounding area.

Pasola Jousting Ceremony
Location : East Nusa Tenggara
Date : 1 February - 1 April
The "Pasola" is Sumba's most exciting ritual with scores of colorfully arrayed horsemen on horseback, buttling with lances. During the war ritual riders charge one another flinging blunt spears. The ceremony is held during February in Lamboya and Kodi and during March in Gaura and Wonokaka. It begins several days after the full moon and coincides with the yearly arrival the shore of strange, multihoed seaworms.

BAU NYALE PUTRI MANDALIKA FESTIVAL (February)
Location : West Nusa Tenggara
Date : 22 February - 7 March
Once a year usually during the fullmoon before down, (sea worms) emerge to the surface of the sea. Such a rare phenomenon drews people to catch the Nyale. While waiting for th Nyale to come out, people indulge in merry making and a colossal play telling the story of the princes Mandalika is performed.

BUMI KHATULISTIWA CULTURAL FESTIVAL (March 21-23)
Location : West Kalimantan
Date : 21 March - 23 March
The festival is held twice a year to commemorate the natural phenomenon of Pontianak lying right on the equator. This festival will feature traditional West Kalimantan art, a tourism and cultural exhibition, traditional sport competition, Equator young man and lady contest and a seminar will also be held during the festival.

International Surfing Competition
Location : East Java
Date : 25 May - 9 June
Plengkung beach, 67 km south of Banyuwangi, East Java is one of the best surfing venue in the world. More than hundred surfers from all over the world will participate in the sport event. Other activities include cultural,art and craft exhibition and other entertainments.

BOROBUDUR INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL
Location : Central Java

The Borobudur festival was first held in 1991 at Borobudur temples complex, Central Java. The event was a huge success and it has become a significant annual event. This International event is held in conjuction with the celebration of the 20th century anniversary of the Borobudur temples restoration. The theme of the festival 1n 2003 is " Balancing the Nation Heritage Conversation and the Community Development ". This event will involve participants from ASEAN, Asia Pasific and Europe. The festival will be highlighted by parade of various local arts, Javanese art and music performances, all night leather puppet show, cooking demonstrations and sales of food, Borobudur fun run, paramotor and other sporting events, seminar, exhibition of art and crafts, photographers and paintings

SRIWIJAYA FESTIVAL (June 16 - 23)
Location : South Sumatera
Date : 16 June - 23 June
The festival is aimed at increasing the appreciation of the local people towards their own culture and to be one of the events for the Visit Indonesia Decade. Coincides with the anniversary of the ancient kingdom of Sriwijaya. The festival includes traditional and speed boat races, decorating contests, and an exhibition of the old Sriwijaya boats.

LAKE TOBA FESTIVAL (July)
Location : North Sumatera
Date : 1 July - 31 July
Lasting whole week, this festival is centered around Lake Toba which is the largest lake in Asia and situated in the highlands of North Sumatera. The festival features traditional sports, boat races, cultural performances and contemporary shows, horse races, and water sports and local handicrafts exhibitions.

KRAKATAU FESTIVAL (July, 2nd Week)
Location : Lampung
Date : 8 July - 14 July
A week long festival is highlighted with Krakatau Cross Country, Krakatau Sprint Rally 10-K Race. Nusantara Cultural Exposition, parade and exhibitions of handicrafts.

BUMI RAFFLESIA FESTIVAL (August - September)
Location : Bengkulu
Date : 1 August - 30 September
This festival is held annualy and organized by the govermment of Bengkulu Tourist Office in coopertaion with Tourism Industries in Bengkulu. Bumi Rafflesia Festival will be highlighted by fishing competition, hnadicrat exhibition, art performances of both traditional and contemporary dances of Bengkulu and other sport tournamnets.

PACU JALUR FESTIVAL
Location : Riau
Date : 1 August
Jalur or canoe races are held coinciding with the celebration of Indonesia's Independence Day. Every decorative Jalur used for the race on the Kuantan river is made of one single large bark of tree, approximately 30 m long and 1 meter wide, manned by 25 to 30 rowers. In the old days, the festival was held after a harvest and it was considered sacred. Nowadays it is more for a celebration.

Grebeg Suro (February 13-22)
Location : East Java
Date : 22 February - 28 February
Javanese moslems celebrate the new year which begins on the first day of the month or Suro (Muharam). One of the highlights of the celebration is the 9th National Reog Festival, held in the town of Ponorogo. The central feature of the famous reog performance is the gigantic mask, consisting of a tiger's head and fan of peacock leathers weighing upwards of 40 kg, worn by a dance in trance. The event begins at 8.00 am.

West Java Off Road Tourism

Mappanretasi (SEA OFFERING CEREMONY)

Sea offering ceremony for thanksgiving. A "Feeding" ceremony is held in the middle of the sea by a Sanro, chief of the Adat. To highlight the event, games, contest,and performances are also be held.

Bali Art Festival
Location : Bali
Date : 1 June - 30 July
The Bali Art Festival is a month-long art festival participated by all regencies with in the province of Bali. The opening ceremony of Bali Art Festival, commence with procession of art and cultural treasures of each regancy. Started from the puputan Margarana / Bajra Sandhi monument at Renon Civic Center to the Art Center downtown where exhibitions and displays of handicrafts, paintings, jewelries and other products are held,while various performing arts are on stage every night from up to mid-July 2003.

MUSI FESTIVAL
Location : South Sumatera
Date : 17 August - 18 August
August 17 is Indonesia's Independence Day and is celebrated throughout the country by its people who actively participate in different kinds of activities. In Palembang the capital of South Sumatera province, the people have a unique celebration with a Bidar Race, held on the Musi River which meanders through the city. The canoes are shaped to resemble animals or animal heads, each of which can hold 40 rowers in colourful outfit, it is one day celebration and starts after the flahoisting ceremony in the morning, than followed by exhibition of handicrafts and cultural performances.

Bunaken Festival
Location : North Sulawesi
Date : 17 September - 23 September
Bunaken is a small island of the coast from Manado, known for its underwater sea gardens. Adjacent to this island lies the Manado Tua, another island visible from the surroundings as a tall mountain. Highlights during the festival include arts and cultural performances from the four ethnic group living in the North Sulawesi province, namely Bolaang Mongondo, Hulontalo ( Gorontalo ), Sangie Talaut and Minahasa. The performances are held in an open air stage and they include legends folklore, bamboo music and a pop song festival.

ERAU FESTIVAL
Location : East Kalimantan
Date : 20 September - 30 September
It's curious enough to get a glimpse of the Dayak culture which has its origins deep in the heart of Kalimantan (Borneo). The festival is held to celebrate Tenggarong's Birthday as the capital city of an ancient kingdom several centuries ago. Traditional Dayak and Malay sports event will be held to add to festivities, however, the highlight of them all all is the throwing of the mock dragon into the Mahakam River which is one of the widest and longest rivers in the country.

A week long festival is highlighted with traditional Aceh dance performances, art and tourism exhibition, carnival as well as other attractions.

Bengawan Solo Fair (October)
Location : Central Java
Date : 1 October - 30 October
It is a tourism event where visitor can enjoy a variety of attractions such as tourism, handicraft, souvenir, painting exhibition and sales. Traditional food festival, seminar, fashion show and commodity on great sales. Besides, visitor can attend the commemoration of the coronation anniversary of the Keraton Kasunanan's King Pakoe Boewono XII who ascended the throne in 1944. The King takes the occasion of the coronation anniversary to sit on the throne and the Royal family pays homage to the King. The event concludes with the grand parade of the Kasunanan Palace's Royal Family to go around the city of Surakarta.

Topat War
Location : West Nusa Tenggara
Date : 1 December - 31 December
The farmers and other community members in Pura Lingsar about 10 km from the town of Mataram throw "ketupat" ( steamed rice wrapped in palm leaves ) at each other in a ceremony in hopes that they will be prosperous. The ceremony is held in the late afternoon. Pujawali ceremony should be held three days before the Ketupat War which falls in December on a full moon.
